SMMS 366 Electronics Policy

 

SCHOOL-BASED POLICY OF THE SCIENCE AND MEDICINE MIDDLE SCHOOL 366 FOR USE OF CELLULAR PHONES, COMPUTING DEVICES AND PORTABLE MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT ON SCHOOL PROPERTY

Students are permitted to bring the following electronic items to school: 1) cellular phones; 2) laptops, tablets, iPads, calculators and other similar computing devices and 3) portable music and entertainment systems, such as iPods, MP3 players, PSP and Nintendo DS. This UPDATED policy was agreed upon by the SMMS 366 School Leadership Team in March 2018. Students are prohibited from USING said devices inside of the school building. PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES ARE NOT TO BE POWERED ON, SEEN OR HEARD AT ANY TIME OF THE SCHOOL DAY.

A. The use of cell phones, computing devices and portable music and entertainment systems at The Science and Medicine Middle School 366 is subject to the following conditions:

  1. Cell phones and portable music and entertainment systems may not be turned on or used during instructional class time or the administration of any school quiz, test or examination.

  2. Computing devices may not be turned on or used during the administration of any school quiz, test or examination, except where such use has been explicitly authorized by the school or is contained in an Individualized Educational Program or Section 504 Accommodation Plan.

  3. Cell phones, computing devices, and portable music and entertainment systems may not be turned on or used during school fire drills or other emergency preparedness exercises.

  4. Cell phones, computing devices, and portable music and entertainment systems may not be used in bathrooms.

  5. Students who use cell phones, computing devices and/or portable music and entertainment systems in violation ofany provision of the NYC DOE’s Discipline Code, the school’s policy, Chancellor’s Regulation A-413, and/or theDoe’s Internet Acceptable Use Policy will be subject to discipline in accordance with the guidance interventions and disciplinary responses set forth in the Discipline Code.

B. Cell phones may not be used as set forth below as per Chancellor’s Regulation A-413.

  1. Cell phones may not be turned on or used while on school property.

  2. Cell phones may not be turned on or used during instructional time, except for instructional and educational purposes as set forth by the teacher.

3. Cell phones may not be used during after-school or school-sponsored programs or activities.

C. Calculators may be used as set forth below and as per Chancellor’s Regulation A-413.

  1. Calculators may be turned on and used during instructional time for instructional and educational purposes with the explicit approval and direction of the teacher.

  2. Calculators may be turned on and used during after-school or school-sponsored programs and activities for instructional and educational purposes.

D. Portable music and entertainment systems may not be used as set forth below and as per Chancellor’sRegulation A-413

  1. Portable music devices and entertainment systems may not be turned on or used while on school property.

  2. Portable music devices and entertainment systems may not be turned on or used during instructional time.

  3. Portable music devices and entertainment systems may not be turned on during after-school or school-sponsored programs and activities.

E. Confiscation and return of electronic items

Students who violate the terms set forth in The Science and Medicine Middle School 366’s school-based policy for the use of cellular phones, computing devices and portable music and entertainment systems are subject to the following disciplinary measures:

􏰀 FIRST OFFENSE: Confiscation and return of device following in-person parent conference. Please do not ask a staff member to return the device to your child.

F. Conclusion

  1. The Science and Medicine Middle School 366 will not be held responsible for cellular phones, computing devices and portable music and entertainment systems that are lost, stolen or broken on school property. STAFF CANNOT LOOK FOR LOST OR STOLEN CELLULAR PHONES. We do not have the legal right to search students unless we have overwhelming probable cause.

  2. Students are not permitted to take pictures, video or sound recordings on school property.

  3. Students may not receive calls or text messages on their personal electronic communication devices during instructional time or any part of the school day.

  4. Students may use landlines in the main office to contact their parents, not their cell phones.

  5. Students may not wear headphones / earbuds in their ears at any time even if they are not listening to music.
